I like that he isn't afraid to take his time. Ok, so this one's a bit of a mess. I love a good ghost story as much as the next person, especially when handled right.
Personally I love it when the focus is on things unseen, thus building atmosphere from which the suspense comes.
It doesn't need to be graphic or gory, but can be if dosed correctly. Another approach I like is the over the top, light hearted fun approach, like in The Frighteners, or maybe even The Ghostbusters.
That's why I was pleasantly surprised by the start of this film. Its poster and synopsis seem to suggest a full out scary ghost story, but it actually….
If you expect nothing from people then you go through life being pleasantly surprised. That part where Sara Paxton is outside awkwardly placing gross trash in the dumpster gave me bad work flashbacks.
In the Innkeepers two quirky, and sort of funny, hotel employees want to know more about ghosts that might be haunting their hotel, eventually ghosts do haunt the hotel and they interact with them.
Also there is a weird psychic woman and a creepy old man guest. It's made well but I just didn't connect with it much.
The characters are goofy but the horror is more real, which just feels off during…. I've said it and I've written it before, but it must be said and written again.
Sara Paxton is absolutely incredible in this film. Her performance as Claire is so fully fleshed out that it is basically impossible to separate the actress from the character now.
All of her awkward mannerisms and quirks are perfection and I really hope that Paxton has a long and fruitful career.
I'm completely honest when I write that her performance is one of my favourite performances ever. I watched House of the Devil in perfect circumstances.
I knew very little, just that there was buzz. I ended up watching it on my laptop in bed with headphones in a completely pitch-black room as I bit my lip to stop from letting any potential jump scares wake the person next to me.
And I was riveted. I was kind of surprised at how riveted I was because then more than ever I didn't have a lot of patience for deliberately slow pace.
But somehow the very deliberate scenes in House of the Devil with the protagonist moving through the house worked like gangbusters on me.

Pretty sure they were going for an anti-climax, but still wondering where the payoff for the damn towels was at. I found it on Tubitv and dubbed in Latin-American Spanish but I was really interesting on seeing it, so I did and it was really cool, mysterious and thrilling most of the time, and has a very scary ending.
This film tries to be a lighthearted buddy flick with a spooky ghost story as the backdrop, while simultaneously being a full blown supernatural horror show; and it succeeds in neither department.
For the most part that film worked. This film wants to be too many different things, and the most glaring issue is how little happens throughout.
This thing is a snooze fest! This could have been decent, but Ti clearly missed the mark here. Ti West follow up to House of the Devil, The Innkeepers suffers being all types of ghosts narratives.

The inhaler was set up to spray a candy flavored breath freshener into Sara Paxton's mouth so it could be used realistically but would taste pleasant.
Goofs The inhaler Claire puffs on throughout the movie when having trouble breathing has a tan colored delivery system. In actuality, this type of inhaler is used at specific times for overall bronchial and nasal health.
The type of inhaler that Claire would have used for stress-induced shortness of breath would have had a different colored body, usually red.
One might argue, however, that if Claire had mixed up her inhalers this could have contributed to her passing out or hallucinating. Quotes Luke : Pessimism is just a higher form of optimism.
