HOW IT WORKS: The International Space Station Apollo 11 2019 Julia Dietz July 20, Retrieved March 2, Instead, Apollo 11 unfolds entirely through archival sources ranging from the transmissions to the voice of NASA's public affairs or well-known TV commentators like Walter Cronkite. It is the exact same footage as in the original film, cut down to 45 min. Self - Command Module Pilot archive footage.

With regard to processing speed, the TI was times faster than the Apollo computer and the TI was almost times faster. The Apollo computer was state-of-the-art in its time, but what would have been different if the moon landing had the state-of-the-art computers that are available today?

I suspect that the software development time would have been a lot faster, due to the software development tools that are available today. It would have been a lot quicker to write, debug and test the complex code required to deliver a man to the moon.

The user interface called Display Keyboard DSKY had a calculator-type interface where commands had to be input using numerical codes.

It would almost certainly not have a keyboard, but would use swipe commands on a touch screen. If that were not possible, due to having to wear gloves, the interface might be through gestures, eye movement or some other intuitive interface.

The actual time it takes to communicate is the same today as it was in — that is, the speed of light, which means that it takes 1. But with the larger files we now send — and from greater and greater distances — to get an image from a spacecraft to Earth today will take relatively longer than it did in That said, it would look much prettier thanks to advances in camera technology.

Perhaps the biggest change we would see is the computer being a lot more artificially intelligent. I am sure that the flying and landing of the space craft would not be put solely into the hands of the computer, but it would have much more information and intelligence and would be able to make many more decisions than the Apollo 11 computer was able to do in This could be a huge relief for the astronauts.

Armstrong did say that, on a worrying scale from one to ten, walking on the moon was about a one — whereas making the final descent to land was about a So let us end by acknowledging what it took to land people on the moon in with the limited computing power that was available at the time.

It really was a remarkable achievement. This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Read the original article.

I saw the film two times in three days in IMAX, and it's stunning. I lived through this time, so there's a strong sense of Deja Vu seeing the use of this highly advanced obsolete technology that I actually remember.

Highly recommended. It's a fitting tribute to possibly the greatest moment in US History. It's also kind of bittersweet realizing that not too long ago, we as a country could pull together to do great things instead of just yelling at each other.

As the movie opens, we are informed it is "July 16, " and a mere 3 hours away from the launch. We get full-color footage of the enormous crowds 15 mi.

Through a quick photo montage, we get a quick glimpse at the three astronauts' life, as they are getting their space suits on. The TV commentator meanwhile talks about "the burdens and hope they carry for all mankind".

It is then time for the astronauts to be driven to the Apollo. At this point we are then 10 min. Couple of comments: this documentary is directed and edited by Todd Douglas Miller.

There have been many documentaries about the Apollo 11 mission before, so what sets this one apart? Several things: first and foremost, during the collaboration between the film makers and NASA, never before seen 70 mm full color footage was unearthed.

That, combined with previously available 16 mm and 32 mm footage allowed the film makers to present this story in a way never before experienced.

Frankly, words are not enough. The astronauts' elevator ride up to the top of the Apollo space ship over ft.

Second, the film makers decided to use no voice-over or narrator, and instead let the TV commentary and the internal NASA discussions do all of the talking.

Third, there is a fabulous electronic score, courtesy of composer Matt Morton. And get this: Morton used only instruments that were around at the time of Apollo 11's trip to the moon in July, , including including the Moog modular Synthesizer IIIc, the Binson Echorec 2, and the Mellotron.

Wow, just wow. When you combine all of these elements, it makes for outright compelling viewing. You may or may not be aware that Neil Armstrong spent the last 40 years of his life here in Cincinnati where I live , including teaching at the University of Cincinnati.

Upon his retirement, he became an even more private person than he already was, and public appearances were rare.

I had the great fortune of seeing him narrate the "Lincoln Portrait" at a Cincinnati Pops performance in , and the outpouring of love, respect and affection from the public for this true American hero made the hairs stand on my arms.

Meanwhile, "Apollo 11" is an unforgettable movie experience, and highly recommended! Check it out if you can. It is the exact same footage as in the original film, cut down to 45 min.

It's as before but projected on the half-dome screen that is the Omnimax. In addition, the Cincinnati Museum Center is currently hosting the "Destination Moon" exhibit, containing, among many other Apollo 11 artifacts, the original freaking Command Module Columbia!!!

Check it out if you can at all It is hard to believe it's been 50 years since the first landing on the Moon by Apollo The two surviving astronauts from that mission are now in their late 80's.

For many people, this epic event may be just another item in the history books. This short documentary just over 90 minutes features digitally re-mastered NASA color film footage and audio from the July mission.

A compressed story is told as it happened, cutting from launch pad to Mission Control to the astronauts themselves, inside the Command and Lunar Modules.

The only narrative is that provided by news commentators and Mission Control at the time. The producers have added some simple animation between segments to alert viewers to each leg of the journey from the Earth to the Moon and back.

A nicely done and generally unobtrusive musical score helps support the mood of the footage. It is a quality presentation, and for this reviewer, nearly as exciting as it was in real time.

Well recommended. Television news reporting of the flight was broadcast virtually around-the-clock over the eight-day duration of the flight, remarkable indeed during pre-cable days, when national television news coverage was limited to just three commercial networks.

In addition to the ubiquitous television news coverage, virtually every aspect of the first manned mission to the surface of the moon was photographed and recorded by NASA, who used cutting-edge, high-resolution cameras and film unique for the time.

But relatively little of the photography--including pictures taken by the astronauts themselves during the mission--has ever been released or exhibited outside of a few selective images published in Life and National Geographic magazines.

Using a direct cinema approach, with no retrospective interviews or narration besides actual radio transmissions between the astronauts and the control center on Earth, director Miller allows the images to speak for themselves, with the primary players explaining the events step-by-step, as they occur.

While much of the previously-seen footage was created on 16mm and 35mm motion picture film, most of the newly-discovered archive footage produced at the time by NASA was photographed on larger 70mm stock, enabling higher-resolution images and wider vistas.
