I eagerly awaited T2: Trainspotting to be released in theaters, then - because life got in the way - I missed seeing it during the brief time it was in my local theaters.
T2 is melancholy. You cannot watch this sequel without feeling nostalgic for the first. The original was released when I was in my 20's, single, naive, hopeful for the future.
Life has changed for us all, and - like the characters in T2 - it hasn't necessarily turned out like we had hoped. Trainspotting was about 4 dudes, living life balls to the wall.
T2 is about 4 miserable middle aged men wondering when they got so damn old and where all the time has gone.
This movie is bittersweet, but definitely more bitter than sweet. I'm glad I watched it, but it just ended up making me feel old.
The chaotic fury of Trainspotting is replaced with a kind of nostalgic worn-out sadness. It's a distinct kind of depressing to see the same guys that were so full of life so worn down by life and clinging to the memories made twenty years ago.
These are guys who have failed in life and keep failing and keep failing and keep failing at everything they touch their relationships, their families, their jobs, their aspirations, their self-conceptions, their friendships, their addictions , but still try to keep grasping for any kind of meaning.
It's a great theme and something they pull off in a touching way. Renton is more of the cerebral outsider; Spud more of a manic oddball, Sickboy more of an amoral individualist, and Bigsby more of an irredeemable psychopath.
It seemed like someone watched the first one and said let's do that just Super-Size it. Anyone who's seen the movie knows what I'm talking about.
So, is it worth watching? If you liked the first one, it's an OK follow-up. Definitely not a great film by any measure, but not terrible either.
There is so much that works, that it almost makes up for the vast quantity that doesn't. However, to get to it, you will have to sit through some pretty insulting stuff.
This is fine. There are moments that really work and there are moments that really don't. It's too long and the last fifteen minutes or so turn into a "Shallow Grave" sequel that I'm not sure anyone wanted all that much.
But all the leads slip back into their roles nicely and, again, there are some really great scenes and moments. As long as you don't go in expecting something as strong as the original "Trainspotting" you shouldn't be too disappointed.

Oh yes!! Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie are back with a bang. I did wonder if they could replicate the original, but they have achieved their aim.
There's some uncomfortable viewing as per the original , but this is the film of friends or enemies?! Banging soundtrack too; it was worth waiting 20 years for this!!

It was always going to be a bit of a stretch making a second film when the first was so good and yes that's right it didn't work.
Thats just the way things go ain't it. One person found this helpful. Having seen this original back in the day and being of the same age as most of the actors I felt a certain sad nostalgia about watching this, a bit like seeing my own aging reflected back at me.
Having said that I absolutely loved it and I would say I enjoyed it more than the original. I loved the first Trainspotting film and this was a worthy second, picking the story up again 20 years after Renton ran off with the proceeds from a drug deal.
Funny, fast-moving and as close to the bone as you can get, it was a real pleasure to see these characters reunited. By the end, I liked Spud a bit more and Begbie a whole lot less which I didn't think possible.
