Daddy's Little GirlWhile driving Julia home, Monty receives a call that his children were involved in a house fire. Without explanation to Julia, Monty immediately heads to the hospital against the protest of an uninformed Julia who fires him.
When Monty arrives at the hospital it is revealed that Sierra accidentally started a fire and that the girls were home alone with no adult supervision.
Julia follows Monty into the hospital to demand she be driven home in time to hear the Social Services representative who was notified by the hospital, make the decision based on the circumstances, to grant immediate temporary custody to their mother, setting a date for a custody hearing.
Monty drives Julia home and they part ways. Julia hires a replacement driver and Monty returns to work as a mechanic.
Meanwhile, the girls face constant abuse and neglect from Joe and Jennifer. Sierra explains to Monty that Joe is forcing her to sell drugs under the threat of hurting Monty if she refused.
Jennifer and Joe arrive and are enraged that the school contacted Monty. Joe threatens Monty during a brief altercation in the principal's office.
Monty, aware that Joe can afford a high power attorney for the custody hearing goes to Julia for help. Julia knows that he cannot afford to hire the firm and turns him away, interpreting his actions as an attempt to use her to get custody of the girls solely so he can use them to get government assistance.
Insulted, Monty leaves after telling Julia to get a life and a man. Julia goes on another blind date with an attorney who she thinks is perfect for her until his wife and kids expose him.
After listening to Monty try to inform the judge that the girls are living with a drug dealer she steps in as his attorney and is able to get the hearing delayed.
She agrees to represent him provided that case preparation occur after office hours. Later, while preparing for the hearing, Julia asks Monty if there is anything bad she should know about him so that she is not surprised in court.
They are interrupted by a phone call and the question goes unanswered. Upon discovering it's her birthday, and that Julia has no plans, Monty takes her to the jazz club in his neighborhood where they drink with his friends and dance.
Julia kisses Monty and asks him to spend the night. Monty obliges, but a drunken Julia vomiting in the bathroom changes her mind and tells him to go home.
Over the next few weeks, they begin to have strong romantic feelings for each other. Monty invites her to meet his daughters at his apartment during his visitation.
She continues to spend time with Monty and his girls and they take a trip to the aquarium. Brenda pulls Julia to the side and berates Monty, stating that he is beneath her status.
Julia later opens up to Monty and tearfully tells him about her last relationship that ended in betrayal. Julia is disgusted and feels betrayed.
She refuses to provide him further assistance with his case and leaves. Monty goes to work and finds Willie, the owner and close friend has been injured in a robbery.
Monty accepts his offer. At am, Monty's daughters arrive at his house and inform him that Joe has been beating them, proving it by revealing that China's back is bruised, while Jennifer just watched and did nothing about it.
While his daughters are asleep, Monty drives away and crashes into Jennifer and Joe's car, after which he physically assaults Joe. A crowd gathers; Joe's thugs arrive and begin to attack Monty.
The crowd, having had enough, defends Monty against them. Julia sees a report on the incident, in which Monty is identified as having been a high school basketball star "falsely convicted" of rape.
Some people just want a nice cozy little mystery that doesn't give them nightmares. I like nightmares! Daddy's Little Girl is about Ellie Cavanaugh who's sister was murdered 23 years ago.
The person who was convicted of the crime is granted parole and has always maintained his innocence. Ellie now an investigative reporter is determined to write a book that will prove once and for all that he is guilty.
Another reason I'm not blaming this book for my lower rating is that I read several reviews for this book which mentioned a "twist that I would never see coming", "an ending that would blow me away".
So I expected both of those things. I shouldn't have, so that's my fault. The synopsis to the book never promised me that, so I went in with a false impression of this book.
To sum up this meandering review: If you like dark thrillers in the vain of Gillian Flynn? This book isn't for you. If you like a fast paced book in the vain of a late 90's Lifetime or ABC movie of the week?

I've read many books by Mary Higgins Clark and I've never been disappointed. I'm always caught off guard by the twist near the end that I didn't see coming.

A good start leads into an absolute slug of a middle book, with most of the exciting action reserved for the three-page epilogue.
Ironically, there is a reasonable degree of suspense to the plot, but our interest ebbed and waned so severely we might have put this down if we hadn't lined up for the hardback.

Though only seven at the time, Ellie's testimony in court weighed heavily in the guilty verdict. But Rob is being sprung on parole, and his wealthy family is pursuing all means, including illegal ones, to have him retried and acquitted.
The rest of the book is basically the war between Rob's antics and Ellie's fact finding, and in the end Andrea's murder plus another one from long ago are all neatly re-solved and tied up with ribbons.
In between, Ellie is harassed and followed and injured, etc. Some all too convenient helpers bail Ellie out of more than one predicament.
So what we find is not really the recipe for a whopping best seller. A dash of suspense is overwhelmed by plodding story lines, improbable action, implausible developments, and a leading lady who after all is said and done is not that easy to really care about.
Clark's innately good story crafting and writing are not enough to make this cake rise and shine.

Why she would blame her self so much about her sister's death? It's beyond normal. If I were Ellie, I would blame my self too, but not so intense like she did.

That's what an eight years old girl supposed to do, right? But, hey, my patience's eventually paid off. The plot twist is amazing.

This story was a twisted web of lies, betrayal, and a families love. The dedication that Ellie shows is what really made this book.

There is a ripple effect that takes a toll on everyone. The story is interesting from the start yet it is not the fastest moving book I have ever read.
Whilst events are moving forward throughout I felt as though there was no real action. It was almost an account of things passing by which compared to other books in this genre was really disappointed.
Overall, I really did expect much more action than I was given. The story follows Ellie years after her sister, Andrea, was killed as she deals with the release of the man who killed Andrea.
Honestly, there could have been many larger twists involved in the story. Putting it simply, it was too predictable for me to be able to put this book in the same category as some of my other reads.
Having read this book I then went on to read more books by the author. As a whole they are good quick reads yet none of them — or at least, none of the ones I have read — are the truly gripping reads that I was hoping for.

So, the positive is: it was like reading a new book. This I liked. Loss of memory? Surely hope not.
Now, what I did not like: Parts of this book are intermingled with trite and hackneyed pieces. Very small amounts thank goodness.
What I liked - it was a page turner! No doubt about it. Mary Higgins Clark had me guessing one way and then another, but I never foresaw what really happened.
She did not disappoint with the main theme. Great suspense! I gave this a five-star from my past memory, but this time I am giving it a 4-star.

I unashamedly love MHC. Her books are very easy to read and play out almost like a movie in my mind. It felt really rushed, as if she didn't know how to finish, or was too tired to go on.
In fact, the book ends with a summary shudder explaining how the loose ends were tied up a little too neatly.
The other thing I didn't like about the book was its multitude of unnecessary characters. There were quite a few who were introduced and had scenes for no apparent reason.
I've shelved this book 'cosy mystery' despite its 'thriller' tag. The writing is not what I'd class as 'edgy' or 'out-of-the-box', and the clues to solving the mystery are not particularly deep or cryptic, giving it that 'cosy' feel.
The crime is awful, and could make you feel uncomfortable, I guess, but I didn't find it graphic or gory. The main character updates a 'website' regularly, and these scenes seem clunky and old-fashioned already it was published in Overall, I did enjoy this, and it did get me in the mood for more MHC.

I liked the simple way it was written and so it was easy to visualize the events. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the main character, Ellie.

But homecoming for Ellie is not going to be welcoming. Soon she realizes someone out there is trying very hard to make sure Ellie never publics her findings.
And that someone will do anything to seal her lips. The synopsis never hinted there was going to be a sudden plot twist. I expected it. It's on me.
I cannot blame the author for it but I couldn't help be a little disappointed that the story did not offer anything more.
Anyhow, I enjoyed the book overall nevertheless. I kept reading it without thinking it was boring or dull. I enjoyed Ellie Cavanaugh's quest for ensuring her sister's killer never saw the light of day ever again.
There were minor twists, one pretty gory too which was icing on the cake for me. The story ended well, I got the climax I wanted except for one important detail that was never revisited.
I wonder if Mary Higgins Clarke forgot to address it or decided to leave it to the reader's imagination, insinuating that we sometimes never get definite answers.
Title: okay, what pulled me to the book in the first place was the title. I admit I liked the creepy quality to it.
But after reading the book the title seems misleading. Still creepy, but in a very different way. Disturbingly different.
Once again I wonder, was this planned by the author to throw the readers off or is the title innocent and I need to tone my mind down a little.

Mary Higgins Clark is a phenomenal author who was born December 24, and she is now 83 years old. She studied at Fordham university and has won many awards for her books.
This novel is one of my favourites of Mary's collection. It is an amazing thriller that has so much suspense. We came away pleasantly surprised with what we saw. The problem that some moviegoers have with this film is quite simple: they're trying to be movie critics.
You go to a horror movie to be scared to wit's end, not to break down and find the climax, anticlimax, and plot twists. You're there for gore, blood, and screams.
With pretty much any Tyler Perry movie, a huge majority of those who watch them are there to either be inspired, to gain insight and maybe a lesson or two on life, or to see what Madea will say next.
And if you have that mindset when you enter the theater to see this film, you will probably not come out disappointed.
The trailer showed this film more in a comedic light, but it is by far a drama with interspersed moments of humor.
While some of the characters may at first come off as so outrageous as to be comical, they still had some semblance of believability to them.
And for a minute film, there's no way to completely dissect every character and why they are the way they are. And again, many non-movie critics understand this.
Idris Elba does a great job stepping away from his more well-known Stringer Bell persona. Though his accent while not indicative of his British roots is still Stringer-sounding wouldn't indicate that his character is from Atlanta where the movie is set , his character is still engrossing.
Gabrielle Union does a notable job as the female lead, and Lou Gossett, Jr. If you are a fan of Tyler Perry's plays, you will recognize his approach and the technique to this movie, and though it does not have the cantankerous Madea giving us lessons on life, it still will probably leave a mark on the moviegoer if s he goes into the theater to be inspired.

Honestly, there could have been many larger twists involved in the story. Putting it simply, it was too predictable for me to be able to put this book in the same category as some of my other reads.
Having read this book I then went on to read more books by the author. As a whole they are good quick reads yet none of them — or at least, none of the ones I have read — are the truly gripping reads that I was hoping for.

So, the positive is: it was like reading a new book. This I liked. Loss of memory? Surely hope not. Now, what I did not like: Parts of this book are intermingled with trite and hackneyed pieces.
Very small amounts thank goodness. What I liked - it was a page turner! No doubt about it. Mary Higgins Clark had me guessing one way and then another, but I never foresaw what really happened.
She did not disappoint with the main theme. Great suspense! I gave this a five-star from my past memory, but this time I am giving it a 4-star. Would recommend for a suspenseful quick read!

She tells what she knows at the trial and he is sentenced to 23 years. Now 23 years later, he is up for parole and Ellie wants to stop it.

Great mysteries without being gory or scary. This one was a little more predictable for me than most of the others. Still a good read.

It felt really rushed, as if she didn't know how to finish, or was too tired to go on. In fact, the book ends with a summary shudder explaining how the loose ends were tied up a little too neatly.
The other thing I didn't like about the book was its multitude of unnecessary characters. There were quite a few who were introduced and had scenes for no apparent reason.
I've shelved this book 'cosy mystery' despite its 'thriller' tag. The writing is not what I'd class as 'edgy' or 'out-of-the-box', and the clues to solving the mystery are not particularly deep or cryptic, giving it that 'cosy' feel.
The crime is awful, and could make you feel uncomfortable, I guess, but I didn't find it graphic or gory. The main character updates a 'website' regularly, and these scenes seem clunky and old-fashioned already it was published in Overall, I did enjoy this, and it did get me in the mood for more MHC.

I have enjoyed all of Mary Higgins Clark's works that I have ever read. This book had enormous meaning other then being a mystery, for Ellie she thought she knew her father and his feelings and after time she found out she was wrong.
They worked out their differences and became a family again. She was able to obtain a new job, brought the t Yet another good mystery. Great book!

The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the main character, Ellie. I found her to be obsessive and frankly just plain rude and careless at parts.

A very descriptive story, she again proves why she is the "Queen of Suspence". A very thrilling story that keeps you hooked and wanting more.

Overall, the story was lacking in suspense unless you were wondering what the protagonist's elaborate next meal was going to be. Spoiler: she usually went with the soup.
To call it a mystery would be incorrect. To call it a thriller would only be partially true. To call it an investigative crime novel with no mystery and little thrill would be accurate enough, so we'll call it that.
This is a story about eight year old Ellie Cavanaugh who discovers her fifteen year old sister Andrea's body in a garage, her head bashed in.
Ellie testifies against Andrea's boyfriend Robson Westerfield in court that puts him in jail. Twenty-two years later, he's on parole, about to To call it a mystery would be incorrect.
Twenty-two years later, he's on parole, about to be released. Now a thirty year old investigative reporter, Ellie decides to go back to her old hometown and ensure he does not get released.
But homecoming for Ellie is not going to be welcoming. Soon she realizes someone out there is trying very hard to make sure Ellie never publics her findings.
And that someone will do anything to seal her lips. The synopsis never hinted there was going to be a sudden plot twist. Julia follows Monty into the hospital to demand she be driven home in time to hear the Social Services representative who was notified by the hospital, make the decision based on the circumstances, to grant immediate temporary custody to their mother, setting a date for a custody hearing.
Monty drives Julia home and they part ways. Julia hires a replacement driver and Monty returns to work as a mechanic. Meanwhile, the girls face constant abuse and neglect from Joe and Jennifer.
Sierra explains to Monty that Joe is forcing her to sell drugs under the threat of hurting Monty if she refused. Jennifer and Joe arrive and are enraged that the school contacted Monty.
Joe threatens Monty during a brief altercation in the principal's office. Monty, aware that Joe can afford a high power attorney for the custody hearing goes to Julia for help.
Julia knows that he cannot afford to hire the firm and turns him away, interpreting his actions as an attempt to use her to get custody of the girls solely so he can use them to get government assistance.
Insulted, Monty leaves after telling Julia to get a life and a man. Julia goes on another blind date with an attorney who she thinks is perfect for her until his wife and kids expose him.
After listening to Monty try to inform the judge that the girls are living with a drug dealer she steps in as his attorney and is able to get the hearing delayed.
She agrees to represent him provided that case preparation occur after office hours. Later, while preparing for the hearing, Julia asks Monty if there is anything bad she should know about him so that she is not surprised in court.
They are interrupted by a phone call and the question goes unanswered. Upon discovering it's her birthday, and that Julia has no plans, Monty takes her to the jazz club in his neighborhood where they drink with his friends and dance.
Julia kisses Monty and asks him to spend the night. Monty obliges, but a drunken Julia vomiting in the bathroom changes her mind and tells him to go home.
Over the next few weeks, they begin to have strong romantic feelings for each other. Monty invites her to meet his daughters at his apartment during his visitation.
She continues to spend time with Monty and his girls and they take a trip to the aquarium. Brenda pulls Julia to the side and berates Monty, stating that he is beneath her status.
Julia later opens up to Monty and tearfully tells him about her last relationship that ended in betrayal.
