Full review at ScreenCrush. A repulsive, poorly made, creatively bankrupt sequel, Bad Santa 2 makes for an utterly mean spirited, unfunny comedy with none of the cleverness or heart from the original.
Like most comedy sequels "Bad Santa 2" fails to live up to its predecessor, but it's still nowhere near the trainwreck some of the trailers made it look like.
The cast is committed especially Thurman who adds an unexpected layer of heart here, and I did laugh pretty hard at parts throughout. But a lot of the jokes are only mildly funny and the ones that aren't even that are pretty horrible.
The film overall is poorly made, and the third act while still entertaining just doesn't have a ton of laughs. This is a middle of the road comedy sequel, it's not horrible but it's sadly a pretty big step down from the surprisingly great first film.
I didn't finish watching the film but this is pretty fucking awful and I don't plan to ever finish it so yeah. Also I've never seen the first one so if there was the slightest sliver of a chance I would ever want to watch the first one, there is certainly no chance now.
Bad Santa is among my favourite Christmas films. I like profanity, I like crude and crass behaviour, and I love Billy Bob Thornton, so Willie's piss-soaked, big-ass loving Santa fitted the bill perfectly for me.
When they announced a sequel nearly 13 years after the original, I couldn't wait, but initial awful reviews chastened my enthusiasm and on my one and only watch nearly two years ago I was bitterly disappointed by this sequel.
However, it seems that maybe, just maybe, I'd been too critical of this film? I know it's crude and crass, offensive and vulgar, but I laughed like a fucking drain this time around, and this review couldn't be more different from my last.
I try to judge every movie individually and regardless of what came before it. It's hard, especially when a film is a sequel to something I'm pretty fond of, but I try to cut every movie and its filmmakers some slack.
This movie-making shit ain't easy, and taking chances in cinema should be encouraged. But then there are movies so cynically made and so completely unnecessary, that aren't drawn from a creator's sequel that they wrote for a different medium like T2 Trainspotting or the continuation of stories set in a larger universe of characters that fans are rabidly clamoring for more of like the Marvel and Star Wars franchises or just new entries in a genre that naturally lends….
Bad Santa 2 is nothing but a vile, repugnant and purposeless sequel which lost everything that made the original so good.

Calling it gross, crass and deeply misguided might also sound like praise to this edge lord sequel but the problem remains; it takes all the basic ideas of what the original was about - namely the misanthrophy, the vile language and the contempt of humanity - and misses all the warmth and satire.
Mistaking misogyny for satire, the unnecessary sequel seems to actively hate women especially plus sized women who know who they are and what they want - hurling nasty abusive insults at everyone and everything and calling it wit.
And people who liked it could think it was all of these things. It has the same cast back minus Lauren Graham and adds Kathy Bates so the on-screen….

I felt a very intangible aspect of the "feel" of the first film was just missing. Sure, the boxes were all ticked but it was as though the driving motivation just wasn't there.
The first film had this strong sense of the titular character attempting to improve his life and having this new reestablished equilibrium at the beginning was interesting enough, I just didn't understand the main characters behaviors or reactions to others throughout.
All in all, still somewhat interesting and worth a watch if seeking further closure from the first film.
